How much wax for a 16 oz (480 ml) candle jar?

Short answer

389 g (13.7 oz) of soy wax

For one 16 oz jar480 ml brim capacity — poured to 90% full. Denser waxes need more, and the charts below give every combination.

The three-wick size. Needs the most wax per unit and the most careful wick testing of anything on this list.

The reason the number surprises people is that two different measurements share a name. A vessel sold as 16 oz holds 16 fluid ounces, which is a volume. Wax is bought and weighed in ounces of mass. Soy sits at about 0.9 g per millilitre, noticeably lighter than water, so a space that would hold 480 g of water holds only about 432 g of wax. Then you leave headspace, and the figure drops again to 389 g.

Every wax type in a 16 oz jar

Density is the only thing that changes between these rows. Same vessel, same 90% fill, different wax.

WaxDensityWax per candleIn ounces
Soy (container blend)0.9 g/ml389 g13.7 oz
Coconut soy blend0.92 g/ml397 g14 oz
Coconut apricot0.92 g/ml397 g14 oz
Paraffin (container)0.9 g/ml389 g13.7 oz
Paraffin (pillar)0.9 g/ml389 g13.7 oz
Beeswax0.958 g/ml414 g14.6 oz
Rapeseed (canola) blend0.92 g/ml397 g14 oz
Palm0.9 g/ml389 g13.7 oz
Gel wax0.95 g/ml410 g14.5 oz

The spread between the lightest and densest wax here is about 6%. On a single candle that is nothing. Across a hundred it is a noticeable amount of wax you either did not order or did not use.

How much your fill level changes it

This is the variable most charts hide. A single-figure rule like “multiply by 0.86” has a fill level baked into it that nobody tells you about. Here is what actually happens to a 16 oz jar in soy (container blend) as you pour higher.

Fill levelUsable volumeWax per candleIn ounces

85%408 ml367 g13 oz
90%typical432 ml389 g13.7 oz
95%456 ml410 g14.5 oz
100%480 ml432 g15.2 oz

Going from 80% to a brim-full pour changes the wax needed by 86 g — more than the difference between any two waxes on this page. If you only get one thing right, get the fill level right.

Fragrance oil for a 16 oz candle

Fragrance is measured as a percentage of wax weight, not of the finished candle. Soy (container blend) holds up to about 10% before it starts to sweat.

LoadFragrance oilIn ouncesFinished pour
6%23 g0.82 oz412 g
8%typical31 g1.1 oz420 g
10%39 g1.4 oz428 g

The finished pour column is the wax plus the oil, which is what the filled vessel will actually weigh before you add the jar itself. It is worth noting because the oil takes up space too — at a high load you can slightly overfill a vessel you measured for wax alone.

Batch totals

Wax clings to the melt pot, the jug and the thermometer. The second column is the arithmetic; the third adds 5% so the last jar in the batch is not short. Figures are soy (container blend).

Change any of it

The calculator below is already set to a 16 oz vessel. Switch the wax, move the fill level, or set a batch size and it recalculates, showing its working each time.

Most calculators multiply your jar size by a single figure of 0.86 and stop there. That number quietly assumes both a fill level and a wax density, so it is wrong for beeswax, wrong for a brim-full pour, and wrong for anything but a standard soy jar. Keeping the two apart is why the answer above changes when you switch wax.

Frequently asked questions

How much wax do I need for a 16 oz candle jar?+

About 389 g (13.7 oz) of soy wax, poured to 90% of the 480 ml brim capacity. Wax is sold by weight and the 16 oz on the vessel is a volume, so the two are never the same number.

How much wax for a 480 ml jar?+

389 g (13.7 oz) of soy wax at a 90% fill. A 480 ml vessel is the same thing as a 16 oz one — suppliers label the same jar either way depending on the market. Multiply the 480 ml by your fill level, then by the wax density, and you have it.

Why doesn't a 16 oz jar take 16 oz of wax?+

Because fluid ounces measure volume and ounces measure weight. Soy wax is about 0.9 g per ml, so the same space holds roughly 10% less wax by weight than it would water. Leave headspace on top of that and you land near 13.7 oz.

How much fragrance oil for a 16 oz candle?+

At 8% of wax weight, 31 g (1.1 oz) of fragrance oil for 389 g (13.7 oz) of wax. That is the percentage most makers run soy at. Measure it against the wax weight, not the finished candle weight — the two give different answers.

How many 16 oz candles will 10 lb of wax make?+

About 11, allowing 5% for wax left in the pot and jug. Without that allowance the arithmetic says slightly more, but the last jar always comes up short.

Does the answer change if I use beeswax?+

Yes. Beeswax is denser than soy at 0.958 g per ml against 0.9, so the same 16 oz vessel needs about 414 g (14.6 oz) — roughly 6% more by weight for exactly the same candle.

What if I fill the jar right to the brim?+

432 g (15.2 oz) of soy. It is not recommended: no headspace means the wick sits at the rim and a lid will touch the wax. 90% is the usual target.
