The reason the number surprises people is that two different measurements share a name. A vessel sold as 14 oz holds 14 fluid ounces, which is a volume. Wax is bought and weighed in ounces of mass. Soy sits at about 0.9 g per millilitre, noticeably lighter than water, so a space that would hold 420 g of water holds only about 378 g of wax. Then you leave headspace, and the figure drops again to 340 g.

The spread between the lightest and densest wax here is about 6%. On a single candle that is nothing. Across a hundred it is a noticeable amount of wax you either did not order or did not use.

How much your fill level changes it

This is the variable most charts hide. A single-figure rule like “multiply by 0.86” has a fill level baked into it that nobody tells you about. Here is what actually happens to a 14 oz jar in soy (container blend) as you pour higher.

Going from 80% to a brim-full pour changes the wax needed by 76 g — more than the difference between any two waxes on this page. If you only get one thing right, get the fill level right.

Most calculators multiply your jar size by a single figure of 0.86 and stop there. That number quietly assumes both a fill level and a wax density, so it is wrong for beeswax, wrong for a brim-full pour, and wrong for anything but a standard soy jar. Keeping the two apart is why the answer above changes when you switch wax.

What if I fill the jar right to the brim?+

378 g (13.3 oz) of soy. It is not recommended: no headspace means the wick sits at the rim and a lid will touch the wax. 90% is the usual target.
