Most calculators multiply your jar size by a single figure of 0.86 and stop there. That number quietly assumes both a fill level and a wax density, so it is wrong for beeswax, wrong for a brim-full pour, and wrong for anything but a standard soy jar. Keeping the two apart is why the answer above changes when you switch wax.

Why jar size and wax weight are different numbers

This is the single thing that trips up every new candle maker. A jar is sold by the volume it holds. Wax is sold by weight. An 8 fl oz jar does not take 8 oz of wax, and a 300 ml jar does not take 300 g.

Wax is lighter than water. Soy sits at roughly 0.9 g per millilitre, so a space that would hold 300 g of water holds about 270 g of wax. Then you leave headspace, because pouring to the brim puts the wick at the rim and leaves nowhere for a lid. Take 10% off for that and the same jar wants about 243 g.

The calculation

Two multiplications, in this order, and nothing else:

wax weight = jar volume × fill level × wax density

Keeping fill level and density apart matters. Most calculators collapse both into a single factor of 0.86 and hand you one number. That factor silently assumes you are pouring soy to about 95% full. Change either of those things and it is wrong, which is why the answer above moves when you switch to beeswax.

Working it out for an unusual vessel

If the supplier has not printed a capacity, measure it. Fill the empty vessel with water to where you intend to pour, tip that water onto a scale, and read the grams. Water is 1 g per millilitre, so the number you see is the usable volume in millilitres — the fill level is already accounted for, so set fill to 100% and enter that figure directly.

Odd shapes and moulds

The water method works for anything: tapered glasses, teacups, silicone moulds, tins with a rolled lip. It is more reliable than geometry for anything that is not a straight-sided cylinder.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring wax by volume. Flakes and pellets pack differently every time. Always weigh.
  • Forgetting wastage. Wax clings to the pot and the jug. Melt about 5% more than the batch needs.
  • Reusing a soy figure for beeswax. Beeswax is denser, so the same jar needs more of it by weight.
  • Pouring to the brim. No headspace means no room for a lid and a wick sitting dangerously close to the rim.

Frequently asked questions

How much wax does an 8 oz jar need?+

Roughly 195 g (about 6.9 oz) of soy wax, poured to 90% full. The jar size is a volume and wax is sold by weight, so the two are not the same number — an 8 fl oz jar never takes 8 oz of wax.

Why isn't 8 oz of wax right for an 8 oz jar?+

Because fluid ounces measure volume and ounces measure weight. Wax is lighter than water, at around 0.9 g per ml, so the same space holds roughly 10% less wax by weight than it would water. Add headspace on top and you land near 6.9 oz.

What is the 0.86 rule and should I use it?+

It is a shortcut that multiplies jar volume by 0.86 to get wax weight. It bakes in both a fill level and a wax density at once, so it only holds for soy in a standard jar. Beeswax is denser and a brim-full pour has no headspace, and in both cases 0.86 gives the wrong answer.

How full should I fill a candle jar?+

Around 90% of brim capacity. That leaves headspace so the wick is not sitting at the rim, gives a lid somewhere to go, and stops wax spilling when the jar is moved while liquid.

Does fragrance oil change how much wax I need?+

Yes, slightly. Oil adds to the finished pour volume, so at a high load you need marginally less wax to fill the same jar. At normal loads of 6–10% the difference is small enough that most makers ignore it and top up if needed.

Do I need different amounts for different waxes?+

Yes. Density varies. Beeswax is about 0.958 g/ml against soy at 0.9, so the same jar needs roughly 6% more beeswax by weight. Switch the wax type above and the answer changes accordingly.
